24th Annual Maxxis Tires “Casey Folks” Vegas to Reno Presented by Fox

After lengthy discussions and the submission of a ground-breaking COVID-19 Safety Plan, the BLM is officially issuing the permit for the 24th Annual Maxxis Tires “Casey Folks” Vegas to Reno Presented by FoxThe race will run as originally scheduled Aug. 12 -15, 2020. A record field of entries including all the top names from every segment of the sport will be competing, eager to win the famously-grueling 550 point-to-point race from Las Vegas to Reno, Nevada, the longest off-road race in the United States. The BLM is granting the permit under the condition that Best In The Desert and its racers adhere to additional COVID-19 mitigation guidelines. These conditions will be spelled out in greater detail in an email to all racers entered in the event within the next couple of days.

With the 2020 Best In The Desert race season just past the halfway point, fans can expect some close racing as competitors challenge for series points championships and bragging rights as champion of this legendary off-road event. “We are happy to report the race will run as scheduled,” said Best In The Desert CEO Daryl Folks. “We sincerely appreciate the work done by the Nevada BLM State Office and the Battle Mountain BLM District Office along with their hard-working team to help us arrive at this point. It’s only fitting that the race named after our father and the founder of Best In The Desert will be run after all. In the end, it came down to the fact that we were able to prove that our racers know how to follow rules and will comply with the special measures we have put in place to make sure we run a safe race and respect the special COVID-19 safety protocol we’ve established.”

“I too am very grateful for all the hard work and cooperation by the BLM,” said Best In The Desert CMO Bryan Folks. “I cannot stress enough how crucial it is for the racing community to follow the new COVID-19 guidelines that will be set forth in the next announcement. The future of Best In The Desert depends on everyone putting aside their personal views and following what is being asked of us. I feel like this is an opportunity for the off-road community to come together and shine and prove that we can follow the rules. We want to thank our racers, sponsors, and staff for their support as we worked through this situation. Finally, we would like to thank our Nevada elected officials and for many other prominent voices for also supporting our event.”

Best In The Desert Race Operations Manager Donald Jackson added, “It has been challenging from all fronts to get the permit approved to run on the original date. There were many obstacles to overcome but ultimately it was a huge team effort that got us to this point. I want to especially thank all those that took time to write letters of support, make phone calls, give medical advice and help us put together a solid COVID-19 mitigation plan especially Medical Director Doc Lippmann, Silver State Offroad Alliance (SSORA), and the Bureau of Land Management (BLM). Without all of us collectively working together, we wouldn’t be able to see all the best off-road racers go head to head in the ‘Longest Off-Road Race in the United States.’”

THIS AND THAT QUICKLY:

With a sponsorship from NV Energy, the Regional Transportation Commission of Southern Nevada (RTC) has added six new electric pedal-assist bikes to the existing RTC Bike Share program.  Southern Nevada residents continue turning to RTC Bike Share for their recreational and transportation needs. In collaboration for a greener, more sustainable future, NV Energy stepped in to help expand the fleet by sponsoring six e-bikes, which customers rent 2.5 times more often. The state mandated shutdown due to the COVID-19 pandemic in the last several months created an overwhelming demand for the bike share program. Ridership jumped 297 percent compared to the same time last year, and the system experienced the most check-outs ever, with an average of more than a thousand rides per day in May 2020.

Branded with the green Powershift by NV Energy logo, the electric bikes are powered by a front wheel pedal-assist motor that allow riders to overcome elevation obstacles and make rides quicker with speeds up to 17 miles per hour. The electric bikes can be rented at any of the 21 bike share locations in downtown Las Vegas. Users can locate them in advance on the RTC Bike Share website map or the BCycle app with a lightning bolt symbol indicator appearing at each station. The electric bikes cost an additional $1 per checkout with the purchase of any of the three pass options: 24-hour, 3-day, or monthly pass. Users can also take advantage of the summer promo until Aug. 31: 30-day pass for only $5 (67% savings).

Professional fitness instructors and mother/daughter duo, Tania and Alisha Molina launched The Happy Destination last year to bring together people who are pursuing a healthier, more balanced lifestyle and have a passion for exploring new cultures and experiences. Given the current coronavirus pandemic restrictions, the Molina’s have re-imagined The Happy Destination to offer virtual wellness retreats and a diverse collection of on-demand workout videos for any age and ability level.

“My daughter and I have a deep love for traveling the world and helping others to stay healthy and fit,” said Tania Molina, co-president of The Happy Destination and owner of Symmetry in Motion, a Pilates studio in Las Vegas. “The Happy Destination was born during our trip to Bali a few years ago. We loved the idea of pairing the act of physical travel with that of inner travel, ultimately to achieve your best self. Unfortunately, physical travel today is restrained due to COVID-19. Yet now more than ever, people need to find balance, strength, and wellness as we deal with an unprecedented level of stress this crisis has caused. That is why we revamped The Happy Destination to help people in the comfort of their own homes.”

The Happy Destination launched its collection of on-demand exercise videos this month. The videos offer efficient and effective cardio and circuit-style strength workouts as well as Pilates classes aimed to achieve maximum mind and body results. Ranging from 15 to 45 minutes in length, the videos are easy to complete at home and when pressed for time and do not require any equipment. The video collection is accessible via a monthly subscription of $19.95 and is updated weekly to ensure variety. The Happy Destination offers a free trial period and access to each individual video outside of a subscription for a nominal fee. The workouts are led by Tania and Alisha, both professional fitness instructors with years of experience in their fields. Based in Las Vegas, Tania is a certified Institute for Integrative Nutrition (IIN) health coach with more than two decades of experience as a Pilates instructor, while Alisha is a spin instructor in San Diego, Calif, who travels the country to train others and open new cycling studios.
